About the Artist
Caroline's Story
I've returned to the place in life where I first experienced wonder: seeing, studying, drawing and painting the natural world around me.

Born in Manhattan and raised in northern New Jersey, I have studied and made art all my life.
Following lengthy careers teaching art and art history, and then practicing law, I returned to a focus on painting after moving to coastal North Carolina in 2018. Fascinated by its vast, low country skies and the ever-changing light and color of southeastern marshes, beaches, roads and waterways, I work in a representational style that occasionally veers toward abstraction. My preferred media are acrylics and pastels.
I hold B.A. and M.A. degrees in art from Rutgers University and Montclair State University, where I studied with noted figurative and abstract painters Joan Semmel and Miriam Beerman, master lithographer Judith Solodkin, art historian Robert G. Bradshaw, and photographer Amy Stromsten. I am an active member of the Associated Artists of Southport, and regularly exhibit at Southport’s Franklin Square Gallery. My work is held in private collections throughout the East Coast, and has won multiple awards presented by the Brunswick Arts Council, the Associated Artists of Southport, and the Waterway Art Association.
For me, close observation is everything. I paint what draws me in visually, putting brush to canvas or pastel to paper, and letting what I see guide me. I aim to bring color, value and form together to create images that are specific in time, space, and especially, light. For me, the act of seeing intensely makes the thing seen — no matter how mundane — eternal, beautiful, even sacred. I believe that the act of seeing blesses the artist and the viewer alike. That’s why I paint, and what I hope the viewer experiences when looking at my work.
